Resolution of the Mayor and Council of Princeton Authorizing an Extended Property Tax Grace Period for Eligible Federal Employees and Federal Contractors Due to the Federal Government Shutdown

WHEREAS, the Federal Government has experienced a lapse in appropriations resulting in a Federal Government shutdown, effective October 1st, 2025 and lasting longer than 21 days effective as of October 22nd, 2025; and

WHEREAS, this Federal Government shutdown was in effect on the property tax installment due date of November 1, 2025; and

WHEREAS, this shut down has furloughed or delayed the pay of Federal Employees and contractors, causing a significant financial hardship for residents of Princeton Municipality; and

WHEREAS, under P.L. 2019, c.491, municipalities are authorized to adopt a resolution extending the grace period for property tax payments for eligible individuals affected by a prolonged Federal shutdown; and

WHEREAS, the Governing Body of Princeton deems it to be in the public interest to provide relief to eligible residents who have been financially impacted by the Federal Government shutdown.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and Council of Princeton, of Princeton Municipality, County of Mercer, State of New Jersey, that an extended grace period for the fourth quarter 2025 property tax installment is authorized for qualifying property taxpayers, extending the deadline from November 1, 2025, to February 1, 2026. Payments made after February 1,2026, will be considered delinquent and accrue interest from the original due date of November 1, 2025

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED eligibility for this extension is for property taxpayers who are Federal Employees furloughed or working without pay due to the shutdown, or contractors whose pay was delayed.
