Resolution of the Mayor and Council of Princeton Authorizing the Submittal of a Scope Modification Request to the New Jersey Department of Transportation for the FY 2026 Municipal Aid Grant on North Harrison Street

WHEREAS, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has previously solicited applications for funding under the Fiscal Year 2026 Municipal Aid Program from local government agencies; and
WHEREAS, Princeton has submitted and has been awarded a NJDOT grant in the amount of $753,540.00 for bicycle, pedestrian and intersection improvements along North Harrison Street between Clearview Avenue and Bunn Drive; and
WHEREAS, Princeton has subsequently installed buffered bike lanes on North Harrison Street between Clearview Avenue and Terhune Road; and
WHEREAS, the Municipal Engineer recommends that a scope modification be requested from NJDOT to focus the awarded grant funds to the improvement of the North Harrison Street / Terhune Road intersection; and
WHEREAS, in accordance with the Harrison Street multi-modal corridor study recommendations prepared by Michael Baker International, the existing signalized intersection is proposed to be replaced by a single lane roundabout with pedestrian and bicycle facilities; and
WHEREAS, an alternatives analysis will be performed to confirm a roundabout is the optimal solution to safely accommodate bicycles, pedestrians, and all motor vehicles through the subject intersection; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and Council of Princeton wish to endorse and support this scope modification.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Council of Princeton formally approve the scope modification for the above stated project.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Municipal Engineer is hereby authorized to submit an electronic scope modification for the project grant MA-2026-North Harrison Street to the New Jersey Department of Transportation on behalf of Princeton.
